James Hehir Building

This £21m building which opened in 2011 is home to specialist teaching facilities, as well as general teaching and study space. The building is named after James Hehir, who was Chief Executive Officer at Ipswich Borough Council for 20 years and a founding member of the Âé¶¹´«Ã½'s Board.

The James Hehir Building is a few minutes’ walk from the main Waterfront Building and features:

  • Specialist Life Sciences teaching and research facility
  • Biotechnology unit, cell culture labs and industry-standard microscope suite
  • Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Dental CIC; an innovative collaboration between the Âé¶¹´«Ã½ and the Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board, dedicated to providing high-quality NHS dentistry services and oral health care
  • Teaching environment for student dental hygienists and therapists, which includes dental simulation with phantom heads for hands-on learning
  • Teaching rooms, seminar rooms and staff offices

Coming later in 2026 as part of ongoing campus development:

  • Reconfiguration of laboratories
  • Teaching facilitates for the new Pharmacy course
  • New staff and student spaces

Coffee Cat café, situated on the ground floor, overlooks the Waterfront and is open to staff, students and the general public.
