Susan Barnet ORCID

In her work, internationally exhibiting artist SE Barnet focuses on process, incorporating an approach that often embraces error and incongruity. This ethos permeates her art practice as well as her academic role as a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the Â鶹´«Ã½. Barnet's work has been exhibited at The Royal Academy of Arts in London, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, The American Academy in Rome, and the Sandberg lnstituut and Nederlands lnstituut voor MediaKunst Montevideo amongst other notable galleries.

She studied at the California Institute of the Arts, led the video art program at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, and taught at UAL Central St Martins in London. Her work has been written about in Art in America, Art Forum, Art Papers and Art Monthly and is in the collections of The Getty Research Institute and the California Institute if the Arts Media Library.

Susan has a wide range of pedagogical experience, she is co-course leader, as well as module leader for the following modules: Establishing your Practice, Exhibition Practice and Sustaining your Practice.

She is module contributor across a range of second and third year modules as well as contributes to the drawing programme of study in first year. She is a PhD supervisor with specialist knowledge in practice-based research in contemporary Fine Art.

The majority of Barnet's practice is one of collaboration and co-creation. Within this, she employs a wide and broad understanding of transdisciplinary methodologies, exercising creative experimentation across multiple disciplines within art, science and culture. This approach manifests in a number of independent and commissioned projects that generate spaces and opportunities to stimulate new ways of examining and understanding humans and landscape.

As such, she is currently a co-investigator and part of the Leadership Team for ARISE (2024-28), a ground-breaking research project funded by UKRI which seeks to develop resilience within the UK’s coastal seas and communities. Within this she co-leads and co-deliveries a series of Citizen Science Art workshops across schools in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Kent. ARISE is an inclusive collaboration among: local, regional, and national authorities; coastal residents, heritage groups and people who care about UK coasts; and experts in policy analysis, cultural engagement, creative practice, health sciences, biological sciences, computer science, pollution management, disaster studies, environmental sciences, economics, and geography. Within this project, she not only works with colleagues from across the Schools of Allied Health Science, Business, Arts, Social Sciences and Technology, and the Suffolk Sustainability Institute here at Â鶹´«Ã½, but also across the Eastern Arc Academic Consortium: University of Essex, University of East Anglia and University of Kent:

She also co-founded and co-leads the ongoing research collaboration Blast Radius, begun in 2021 with artist researcher and colleague, Dr Jane Watt. With Blast Radius, Barnet and Watt bring together artists, researchers and specialists in art, heritage, technology, sustainability and science to explore contemporary sites through the lens of art, ecology and heritage research. Through active field research, creative collaboration and exploration of archival materials, they encourage dialogues and artworks towards stimulating new ways of examining and understanding our world:

As part of this project, they were commissioned to make a short film, Longshore Drift, (2021) for British Art Network’s Landscape Research Group supported by Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and Tate. They are currently leading a long-term research project Power House, (2023- ) on Orford Ness, in partnership with The National Trust. This project investigates heritage and ecological aspects of Orford Ness through artist-led research, public engagement and knowledge exchange. To date they have delivered three artist residencies, multiple exhibitions and workshops, engaging over 70 artists, with nearly 25,000 visitors to the these over two years.

In 2021 Barnet became part of an international collective of women artists known as The Crown Letter. This weekly online publication presented by a network of visual artists, composers, writers and filmmakers from around the globe, acted as both a platform for distribution and an archive. The Crown Letter has been awarded funding through a Fluxus Art Project grant 2021, the Hans und Lea Gründig Preis 2021. Barnet produced over 50 publications for the Crown Letter and participated in 6 international exhibitions. ,

Barnet is the co-founder and organiser of radical reThink, a collective that focusses on building solidarities and enacting resilient alternatives to market-based models of education. radical reThink strives towards the creation of open communities inclusive of students and educators. In 2017 it ran the international symposium radical reThink at the ICA London - a UAL cross-college collaboration between faculty and students. This international symposium brought together leading educators, artists, designers, curators, and researchers for a day of talks, discussions and workshops to critically address urgent issues for Fine Art in Higher Education. This resulted in a published book chapter in Art, Politics and the Pamphleteer, Jane Tormey and Gillian Whiteley, as part of the Radical Aesthetics-Radical Art (RaRa) series (ed.), (London: Bloomsbury Academic, 2021) 9781350022454 (collectively authored as radical reThink:
