Ann-Marie is Lecturer in Painting on the BA (Hons) Fine Art course. She completed her MA in Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art, London (2012), received her Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London (2010), and a BA (Hons) Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London (2004).
She is currently a PhD Research Candidate at the Royal College of Art in London, where her practice-led research examines the ways in which the role and perception of appropriation in is changing, with particular attention to developments in language models. Her focus is on practices that sit at the intersection of contemporary art and popular music, and which employ appropriation, quotation and sampling.
Her recent exhibitions include Fail We May, Sail We Must at the Brown Collection, London; The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, London; The Drawing Biennial, The Drawing Room, London; Barbara Hepworth: ‘a work of mine in your house’ at Kettle’s Yard, University of Cambridge; and Contemporary collecting: David Hockney to Cornelia Parker at The British Museum, London.
Ann-Marie is a contributing lecturer on practical modules across all levels. She is module co-leader for first year modules: Concepts, Sites, and Critical Dialogues, as well as Modes of Display.
Ann-Marie’s practice explores two main themes:
One is the idea of change, of metamorphoses, of one thing turning into another. Change is a constant, and she is interested in the connectedness of all things, in a cultural conversation that stretches right back to antiquity, and to ancient Greek and Roman myth in particular.
The other is the idea of a connection, or dialogue, with art history via the use of found imagery and texts. Ann-Marie is interested in using the found to investigate her own responses to individual historical works, to the artists that made them, and to their themes and origins.
